Ramgarh is a scenic district in central Jharkhand, known for its hills, forests, rivers, dams, waterfalls, temples and rich historical heritage. Located in the North Chotanagpur region, Ramgarh is also an important industrial and mining centre. The district headquarters is Ramgarh Cantonment.
Geography
Ramgarh district covers an area of approximately 1,360 square kilometres and forms part of the Chota Nagpur Plateau.
The district shares boundaries with Hazaribagh in the north, Bokaro in the northeast, Ranchi in the south, and Ranchi and Purulia in the east.
The landscape consists of forested hills, valleys, plateaus and river systems. The Damodar River is the most important river flowing through the district, while the Bhairavi River is another significant watercourse.
History
Ramgarh has a rich historical background. The region was historically associated with the Ramgarh Raj, one of the important estates of the Chota Nagpur region.
Ramgarh also holds an important place in India’s freedom movement. The 53rd session of the Indian National Congress was held at Ramgarh in 1940, with Maulana Abul Kalam Azad serving as the Congress president.
The district was officially created on 12 September 2007, after being separated from Hazaribagh district.
